베르쇠즈(Berceuse), 클래식을 통해 엿보는 아이들의 세계

부모의 품속에서 어렴풋이 들려오는 따뜻한 자장가 소리에 맞춰 새근새근 잠에 드는 아이들. 그것은 어쩌면 우리가 늘 그리워하며 바라는 동심의 세계일지도 모른다. 돌아가기엔 이미 너무 훌쩍 커버린 우리는 때때로 그 낯익은 자장가의 선율을 머릿속에서 되뇌며 그리움에 휩싸인다. 음악은, 설사 그것이 단조로운 음들의 모음일지라도, 우리에게 어떤 특별한 정서를 환기하며 기억에 생명을 불어넣기도 한다. 그런 음악 중에서도 클래식 작곡가들이 탄생시킨 자장가, 혹은 베르쇠즈를 들어보면서 머나먼 동심의 세계로 한 발자국 옮기며 그 시절의 기억을 차분히 음미하고자 한다.

베르쇠즈(berceuse)는 프랑스어로 자장가라는 뜻으로 기악용 소곡의 일종이다. 6/8박자로 이루어진 이 곡들은 아이들의 잠을 부르는 노래인 만큼 단조로운 구성으로 이루어져 있다. 같은 음역에서 비슷한 모티프와 악절이 반복되는 오스티나토 풍의 베이스가 주를 이루는 것도 특징적이다. 그리고 특히 주목할 만한 점은 바로 전통적 이유로 거의 모든 베르쇠즈 들이 단조로 작곡되었다는 것이다. 베르쇠즈를 직접 들어본다면 격정적이거나 자극적인 모티프보다는 평화롭고 안정적인 주제가 부드럽게 곡 전반을 걸쳐 드러나 있는 것을 확인할 수 있다.

베르쇠즈, 혹은 자장가로 가장 유명한 것은 아마 브람스의 자장가일 것이다. 가장 대중적인 브람스의 자장가는 1868년 작곡되었고, 그 정식 명칭은 "Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, gute Nacht" (“자장가: 좋은 저녁, 좋은 아침”)이며, 독일의 민요시들로부터 가사를 차용하여 썼다. 이 작품은 6/8 박자의 구성에 단조로 편성되었고, 빠르지 않고 차분한 멜로디가 반복되어 잠을 부르기에는 최적의 클래식 곡이다. 요하네스 브람스는 이 곡을 과거에 사랑했던 여성 베르타의 둘째 아들에 헌정했다. 비록 다른 남성과 결혼했지만, 그의 이름 요하네스를 따라 둘째 아들의 이름을 지은 것에 대한 보답이었다. 이 자장가는 훗날 독일인 이주민들이 이를 미국에 퍼뜨리면서 본격적으로 유명해지게 되었다.

다음으로 소개할 곡은 슈만의 <어린이 정경> 중 15번의 7곡, 트로이메라이(Traumerei)이다. 꿈, 혹은 공상이라는 이 제목을 가진 곡은 따스한 주제부를 반복하고 조금씩 변화해 이어져 나가며 어린이들의 눈으로 바라본 평온하면서도 꿈으로 가득 찬 세계를 표현한다. 슈만은 기교를 최대한 배제하여 단순하게 곡을 구성했지만, 그의 풍부한 감성과 세계관은 음과 음 사이에 커다란 밀도로 자리 잡고 있다. 따라서 낮은 난도에도 불구하고 그것이 갖는 음악적 깊이를 인정받아 여러 거장에 의해서 연주되고 있는 곡이기도 하다. 트로이메라이를 포함한 슈만의 <<어린이 정경>> 곡들은 자신이 사랑했던 여인, 클라라와 가정을 꾸리고 아이들과 행복하게 뛰노는 정경을 상상하며 쓰였다. 베르쇠즈인 7번 말고도 “어린이의 희망”과 “아이는 잠들고”와 같은 곡들이 있다.

쇼팽의 베르쇠즈 역시 빼놓을 수 없다. 곡을 들어보면 전반에 걸친 오스티나토, 6/8 박자의 구성, 단조의 구성 등 베르쇠즈의 전형적인 모습을 확인할 수 있다. 브람스의 자장가처럼 뚜렷한 주제가 있지는 않지만 부드럽게 흘러가는 16분음표들과 32분음표들의 연속 속에서 황홀함이 느껴진다. 또한, 그의 대표적인 작품들에서 흔히 사용되는 화음 전개와 낭만적인 음악적 스타일이 곡 전반을 걸쳐 드러나 있다. 베르쇠즈가 갖는 보편적인 형식 안에서 쇼팽은 자신만의 개성이 담긴 독창적인 자장가를 작곡했다. 리드미컬한 연주를 듣고 싶다면 루빈스타인의, 섬세한 연주를 원한다면 폴리니의, 느리고 잔잔한 연주를 듣기 원한다면 아슈케나지의 연주를 추천한다.

마지막으로는 지금까지 소개한 곡들과는 달리 피아노와 바이올린의 두 개의 악기 편성을 가지고 있는 라벨의 베르쇠즈에 대해 소개하고자 한다. 이 베르쇠즈는 그의 스승이었던 프랑스 작곡가 가브리엘 포레에 대한 오마주며, 따라서 그 정식 명칭은 “Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Faure”이다. 곡에서 피아노는 다양한 코드를 같은 박자로 반복하고, 바이올린은 대위법을 이용해 연주한다. 곡은 라벨 특유의 음색이 드러나며 잔잔하면서도 몽환적인 분위기를 자아내, 일반적인 자장가와는 다른 분위기를 연출한다. 라벨은 가브리엘 포레의 이름의 알파벳 철자를 따서 멜로디를 만들고 이 멜로디를 중심으로 변형된 여러 악절을 만들기도 했다. 이러한 모습에서 라벨의 천재성을 다시금 발견할 수 있는 작품이다.

처음에 베르쇠즈는 단순히 아이들을 잠재우기 위한 소곡으로서 작곡되었지만, 작곡가들은 그 형식 속에서 오선보를 각자의 개성과 감성, 그리고 음악적 깊이로 채워놓아, 어른의 눈으로 바라본 동심의 세계를 독창적으로 그려내었다. 때때로 유난히 생각이 많아지는 밤이 찾아오곤 한다. 그리고 그 생각들은 이따금 강박이 되어 우리의 잠자리를 방해한다. 최근 들어 ASMR이나 백색소음, 혹은 이른바 ‘힐링 음악’이라 불리는 곡들이 하나의 주류 음악 분야로 자리 잡았다. 이는 현대인들이 공유하고 있는 불면증과 불안 증세와도 아주 무관하지는 않을 것이다. 음악은 우리의 삶의 모든 순간에 관여하며 새로운 정서를 환기하고 증폭시킨다. 또 우리를 전혀 다른 환상의 세계로 이끌어주기도 한다. 가끔 앞에서 소개한 베르쇠즈들을 들으며 망각했던 동심을 다시 떠올려 보는 것은 어떨까? 그것은 분명 온갖 부조리와 비합리에 지쳐버린 우리 현대인들의 따뜻한 안식처가 되어줄 것이다.

Berseuce, Looking into the Children's World through Classical Music

The children fall asleep in the arms of their parents in response to the whisper of a warm lullaby--it may be the childhood memory we always miss and hope for. Too grown up to go back, we sometimes feel longing for the familiar melody of lullaby in our heads. Music, even if it is a collection of simple notes, may awaken special emotions and breathe lives into memories. Among those pieces, with lullabies created by classical composers, also known as berceuse let’s take a step back into the world of distant childhood and savor our old memories.

Berceuse, lullaby in French, is a type of instrumental composition. As they are the songs to put children into sleep, these 6/8 meter songs are made up of a monotonous plot. And the basso ostinato, similar motif and clauses repeated in the same range, is another major feature. Last noteworthy feature is nearly all berceuse were written in minor keys, for conventional reasons. If you listen to the berceuse, you will notice that peaceful and stable themes are gently revealed throughout the music, rather than passionate or provocative motifs.

The most famous berceuse, or lullaby, is perhaps Brahms’. His most popular lullaby was composed in 1868, which the original name is " Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht " ("Lullaby: Good Evening, Good Morning”), and borrowed German folk poems for lyrics. This piece is composed with 6/8 meter and minor key, and has slow and calm repeated melody which makes the piece the perfect classical song for sleep. Johannes Brahms dedicated the piece to the second son of his former lover, Berta. Although she married another man, it was an appreciation naming her son after his name, Johannes. The piece was widely known later when German immigrants spread it in the US.

The next song to be introduced is R. Schumann's "Traumerei," No.7 of <Childhood Scenes Op.15>. The composition, title meaning dream or fantasy, expresses the peaceful and dream-filled world viewed by children's eyes by reiterating warm theme and continuing with small transforms. Schumann composed the piece simple without complex technique, but his rich emotion and world are placed among notes. Therefore, despite the low level of difficulty, the composition has been recognized for its musical depth and is played by various masters. Schumann's songs, including Traumerei, were written imagining the scenery of happily playing with his children and a woman he loved, Clara. Other well-known pieces are "Pleading Child" and "Child Falling Asleep."

Chopin's Berceuse is also indispensable. If you listen to the piece, you will find out the typical composition of the berceuse, such as dominating ostinato, 6/8 meter composition, and the minor keys. There is no distinct theme like Brahms' berceuse, but one may feel the whelming sound in a series of flowing sixteenth and thirty-second notes. Also, the chord development and romantic musical styles commonly used in his works are revealed throughout the piece. In the universal form of bercuese, Chopin composed a unique lullaby of his own. I recommend Rubinstein's for rhythmic performance, Pollini's for sophistcated performance, and finally, Ashkenazy's for slow and peaceful performance.

Lastly, I would like to introduce Ravel's berceuse, which is played by two instruments unlike pieces introduced above: piano and violin. This berceuse is an homage to his mentor, French composer Gabriel Faure, and called "Berceuse sur le nom de Gabriel Faure." In the song, the piano repeats various codes at the same meter, while the violin plays counterpoint style. The piece creates a peaceful and dreamy atmosphere with the unique timbre of the Ravel, forming different atmosphere from a common berceuse. Also, Ravel took the alphabet spelling of Gabriel Faure's name and created a melody, and then created various modified passages, once again revealing Ravel's genius.

At first, berceuse was composed as a simple piece of music to calm the children, but the composers filled music sheet with unique emotion, personality, and musical depth of their own. Sometimes complicated thoughts visit us at nights. And the thoughts sometimes become a compulsion and hinder our sleeping. Lately, ASMR, white noise, or songs called "healing music" have appeared at the mainstream music scene. This may not be entirely unrelated to the insomnia and anxiety shared by modern people. Music is involved in every moment of our lives, sometimes changing and sometimes amplifying new emotions. Sometimes, it also leads us to a totally different world of fantasy. Just like that, listening to the berceuse may bring you back to your forgotten childhood world, away from the exhausting and absurd reality.
