공포와 아이돌이 만나면?

음악은 더 이상 듣는 것만이 아니다. 보는 것이다. 이제 우리는 음원뿐 아니라 뮤직비디오와 무대 영상을 통해서 노래를 부르거나 노래에 맞춰 춤을 추는 가수들을 만나볼 수 있다. 특히 아이돌 음악은 노래보다는 퍼포먼스에 가깝다. 노래의 질과 중독성이 성공의 가장 큰 요인이지만 그 노래의 컨셉, 군무, 의상 등이 성공에 기여한다.

공포라 하면 영화를 먼저 떠올릴 것 같다. 공포와 관련된 음악이라면 공포 배경음악이 생각날 것이다. 상큼하거나 청순하거나 섹시한 아이돌에게서 공포를 연상하기엔 어려울 것 같다. 하지만 공포는 아이돌이 많이 시도한 컨셉 중 하나다. 아마 여러분도 노래 한 곡은 떠오를지도 모르겠다. 이 글에서는 내가 아는 공포 컨셉의 노래 세 곡을 소개하려 한다.

1. 빅스– 저주인형 (2013)

‘컨셉돌’로 불리며 다양한 컨셉을 시도하고 소화력을 인정받은 아이돌 그룹 빅스의 첫 번째 정규앨범의 타이틀곡이다. 제목 그대로 저주인형이 되어 자신이 사랑한 여자를 아프게 한 남자에게 복수하겠다는 내용이다. 안무에 해골봉을 사용하는데. 해골봉을 바닥에 콱 박거나 시계추처럼 흔들며 시간이 더 이상 없다는 메시지를 전달하기도 한다.

2. 선미 – 보름달 (2014)

가수 선미가 걸그룹 원더걸스 멤버에서 솔로가수로 거듭난 후 발매한 첫 미니앨범 <Full Moon>의 타이틀곡이다. 솔로 데뷔 싱글 타이틀곡 ‘24시간이 모자라’에서는 섹시미를 강조했는데. ‘보름달’에서는 다른 의미의 섹시미를 보여준다. 이 노래는 몽환적이면서 묘하게 중독적이다. 선미는 뱀파이어로 등장하며 달이 떠나가기 전에 사랑하는 사람에게 와 달라고 간청한다. 참고로 선미는 뮤직비디오 및 공연에서 맨발로 춤을 춘다 (걸그룹은 보통 하이힐을 신고 춤을 춘다). 그리고 춤이 과격하지 않고 소파에 앉거나 소파에서 잠깐 나와서 하는 안무가 전부다. 움직임도 적은데 이 미묘한 움직임이 섹시미를 만든다. 의상은 짧은 드레스로 선미의 장점인 다리 길이를 보여준다.

3. 드림캐쳐– Chase Me (2017)

‘드림캐쳐’라는 7인조 걸그룹의 첫번째 싱글 타이틀곡이다. 이 노래는 전형적인 걸그룹의 노래와는 전혀 다르다. 앞에서 말했듯이 걸그룹 하면 상큼, 청순, 섹시 등을 떠올리는데, 이 노래에는 그 어떤 것도 보이지 않는다. 7명의 소녀가 7개의 악몽이 되어 한 남자를 괴롭히며 그 남자는 이후 드림 헌터가 되어 악몽들을 없애려 한다는 기괴한 설정이다. 뮤직비디오에서 주인공이 악몽으로 인해 미쳐가면서 도끼를 내려찍는 장면이 있다. 강렬한 기타 사운드가 인상적이며, 흡사 일본 애니메이션 노래 같다. 안무도 매우 어려우며, 멤버들의 라이브 실력도 출중한 편이다.

앞에서 말했듯이 케이팝(K-Pop)은 듣는 음악에서 보는 퍼포먼스로 바뀌고 있다. 그에 따라 컨셉이 중요해졌고, 창의적인 컨셉으로 시선을 끄려는 시도들이 늘어났다. 동시에 공포도 하나의 컨셉으로 이용되었다. 공포 컨셉 노래는 공포 영화처럼 무서운 것은 아니지만 오싹한 뮤직비디오와 소품을 동원해 공포스러운 분위기를 조성하고 보는 시청자들에게 신선한 충격을 준다. 이제 아이돌은 예상하지 못한 컨셉으로 우리의 눈과 귀를 즐겁게 해주는 것이다.

<When Horror and Idols Meet>

Music is no longer just about listening. It’s about watching. Now we can see pros singing and dancing through live stage videos and music videos. Idol music, especially, is more of a performance than a song. The song’s quality and its addictiveness are certainly the biggest keys to success, but the theme, dance, and costume undoubtedly contribute too.

When you hear the word ‘horror’, the first thing that comes to your mind will probably be movies. Music related to horror will remind you of background music from a horror movie. It might be hard to associate horror with sweet, pure, or sexy idol groups. However, horror is a theme tried time and again by idols. Maybe you’re reminded of a particular song right now. In this article, I will introduce three horror-themed songs.

1. VIXX – “Voodoo Doll”(2013)

"Voodoo Doll" is the title track of the first full-length album of the idol group VIXX, otherwise known as “concept-dol” for trying out various concepts successfully. As the title suggests, the song is about becoming a voodoo doll to avenge the man who hurt the woman he loves. They use skeleton sticks for the choreography, occasionally smashing them on the ground or swinging them like a pendulum to show that time is running out.

2. Sunmi– “Full Moon"(2014)

“Full Moon” is the title track of Sunmi’s Full Moon, the first mini album released after her solo debut (used to be a member of Wonder Girls). The title track of her solo debut single, “24 Hours”, stressed her sexiness too, but “Full Moon” shows sexiness in a different sense. This song is dreamlike and peculiarly addictive. Sunmi appears as a vampire, calling for her loved one to come to her before the moon goes down. As a side note, Sunmi dances barefoot in the music video and on stage (girl groups usually dance in high heels). The dance moves are not wild; it’s just sitting on the sofa, occasionally dancing off the sofa. Those subtle moves are enough to create sexiness. The costume is a short dress, showing Sunmi’s extremely long legs.

3. Dreamcatcher– “Chase Me” (2017)

This song is the 7-member girl group Dreamcatcher’s first single title. This song is totally different from that of typical girl group. As mentioned before, girl groups are associated with sweetness, purity, or sexiness, but this song has none of these characteristics. Rather, it is a bizarre concept where seven girls become seven nightmares and haunt one man, who later becomes a ‘dream hunter’ to get rid of these nightmares. In the music video, there is a scene where the protagonist swings an ax, driven insane by the nightmares. The intense guitar sounds are impressive, and the song sounds like it’s from a Japanese anime. The choreography is very difficult and the members’ vocal abilities are also excellent.

As mentioned, K-pop is transforming from music for listening to a performance for watching. Accordingly, themes become important, and attempts to draw attention with a creative concept increase. Horror is being used as one of them. Though horror concept songs are not as terrifying as horror films, they create a creepy atmosphere and give the viewers a fresh jolt by utilizing scary music videos and props .Idols now entertain our eyes and ears with unexpected concepts.
