고등학교에 문화예술에 대한 정보를 제공하는 통로가 부족한 것 같다는 생각에 시작한 잡지였습니다. 문화, 영화, 미술 등 각 동아리의 장들에게 연락해 사람을 모으고, 사비로 손해를 보면서 잡지를 냈었습니다. 그랬는데 이제 졸업을 하고, 대학을 가고, 모두 성인이 되었습니다. 그래도 달라지는 것은 없었습니다. 여전히 관심 있는 만큼만 알고, 누군가 쉽게 알려주지 않으면 알기 싫었습니다. 온갖 제약이 풀려도 제가 아는 것의 한계는 그대로였습니다. 그래서 잡지를 더 이어나가고 싶었던 것 같습니다. 쉽게 이야기하고, 쉽게 읽을 수 있는 곳이 필요했습니다. 나에게 익숙한 언어로 내가 좋아할 만한 것에 대해 소개를 해주는 곳, 이 잡지가 그런 곳이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.
우리는 전문가도 아니고, 공부를 많이 한 사람들도 아니고, 문화예술 업계에 종사를 하는 사람들도 아닙니다. 이제 갓 사회에 나왔으며, 누군가는 그저 문화예술을 좋아할 뿐이고, 또 누군가는 언젠가는 작품을 만드는 사람이 되기를 꿈꾸기도 합니다. 하지만 아직 그뿐입니다. 그런 우리들이 쓰는 순전히 주관적인 취향에 따른 작품 리뷰와 소개가 누군가에게는 계기가 되었으면 합니다. 전문가는 아니지만 문화예술을 좋아하는 우리들에게 모두 계기가 되는 하나의 작품이 있었던 것처럼 또 다른 누군가가 계기를 찾을 수 있다면 좋을 것 같습니다.

교내에서 활동하던 동아리에서 조금의 정비를 거쳐 더 넓은 무대를 찾아 웹으로 옮기게 되었습니다. 청소년 예술 잡지 ‘프렌지’는 세계의 아마추어 예술인들을 위한 공간이 될 것입니다. 주위를 둘러보는 것만으로도 온갖 예술의 흔적을 찾을 수 있는 시대에, 그 흔적들에 관한 이야기를 풀어가는 곳, 그리고 그 흔적들을 만들어 가는 곳이 되겠습니다. 특히 다양한 예술 장르의 탐색과 만남을 통해 ‘프렌지’를 읽는 모두가 더욱 다채로운 일상을 만들 수 있으면 합니다.

고등학교 시절, 학교 안에서 작게나마 예술에 대한 우리의 생각과 이야기를 담아 Frenzi라는 잡지를 만들었습니다. 그때 나 지금이나 마찬가지로 Frenzi의 사람들은 모든 것에 해박한 전공자가 아닙니다. 오랜 시간 동안 예술계를 지켜본 권위 있는 비평가도 아닙니다. 하지만 우리 나름대로 문화예술에 대해 느낀 것들에 대해 치열하게 생각하고, 고민하고, 상상했던 것에 대해 이야기해보고 싶었습니다. 그리고 학교의 울타리를 벗어난 지금, 다시 Frenzi를 시작해보려 합니다. 울타리 밖에서 좀 더 많은 사람들과 우리의 이야기를 나누고 싶고, 좀 더 많은 사람들에게서 그들의 이야기를 듣고 싶습니다. 그 무엇보다 ‘예술’이라는 단어를 들었을 때 무심코 한 발짝 뒤로 물러서게 되는 듯한 거리감에 대해 함께 풀어 나가고 싶습니다. 독자들과 함께 우리의 고민과 생각을 이어나갈 수 있길 바랍니다.

프렌지는 답답한 학교에서 친구들과 시작했던 동아리로, 전형적인 서사에 따르면 소중한 추억으로 남았을 것입니다. 하지만 저희가 같이 쌓아올린 이 잡지를 학교 밖으로 나오고 모두가 떨어져서도 계속할 수 있게 되어서 참 좋습니다. 우리의 세계가 넓어진 만큼, 프렌지가 담을 수 있는 생각과 관점도 다양해지고, 그만큼 더 유익한 내용을 보일 수 있으면 합니다. 계속 유지되면서도 변하며 발전하는 프렌지가 되어 많은 사람들에게 알려지고 즐거움과 영감을 줄 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다.
EDITOR'S GREETING

It was a magazine published in the thought that there weren’t enough ways to receive arts-related information at our high school. We contacted the literature, movie, art clubs amongst others to gather people, and published the magazine from our own pocket money. Now we have all graduated, gone to college, and become adults, however, nothing has changed. We only know as much as we are interested in, and don’t want to learn more if not offered in an easy manner. Despite all the restraints that are now gone, my limits were the same. Perhaps for that reason I wanted to continue Frenzi. I needed a place where we could talk and read easily. A place that would introduce in a language familiar to me a topic attractive to me; this is what I hope Frenzi to become.
We are not specialists or experienced scholars, nor are we working in the arts. We have only now come into society; some of us simply love the arts, some of us dream to create art someday. But only that. We hope that even so the subjective articles that we write will become a motive and inspiration for someone. Just as each of us had a special piece that led us to become interested in the arts, we hope that some other will be able to find that special piece.

After going through a few revisions, we have gone from a school club to a larger stage through the web. Frenzi, an art magazine for youths, will go on to become a space for the world’s amateur artists. In a world where traces of art can be found anywhere, we will become where the stories about those traces can unfold and new traces can be made. I especially hope that Frenzi can make our readers’ days more colourful through the exploration and introduction of various areas of arts.
EUNJAY
Back in high school, we made Frenzi as a simple way to show our thoughts and stories about art. We were not extremely well-versed in art then, and we are not now. We aren’t respected art critics who have been around for a long time. Yet we wanted to think about our impressions on art, to argue and talk about what we imagined. Now that we’ve escaped the boundaries of our school, we hope to start Frenzi again. We wish to talk with more people in a broader landscape, and to listen to more peoples’ stories. More than anything we want to hear about the particular distance some people have about the word ‘art’. We hope that our audience will empathize and think along with us.

Frenzi was a club that a few friends started at a distressing school, something that would have become a treasured memory, as the cliché goes. But it makes me glad that this magazine that we built together should continue even after we have graduated and have scattered around the world. As much as our world has grown, I hope that the thoughts and perspectives that Frenzi will contain should become diverse, and that the content we deliver should become that much more useful. I wish that Frenzi should continue, and continue to change and develop so that more people should come to know us, and receive joy and inspiration from us.
