고양이들과 함께하는 치유의 여정

<고양이 학교> 3부작은 우리나라 최초의 연작 판타지 동화이다. <고양이 학교>는 출간 연도인 2001년이나 지금이나 여전히 판타지 장르의 무덤인 한국 주류 문학계에 신선한 바람과 같은 존재처럼 보인다. 열 한 권의 책(1부 다섯 권, 2, 3 부 세 권)에 걸쳐 소개되는 세계는 다양한 미디어로 접해 익숙한 서양 판타지와는 확연하게 다르다. 우선 고양이 세계에 관한 설정은 동양철학의 핵심인 조화를 기반으로 한다. 그 위에 고양이의 다양한 모습과 이야기를 끄집어내는 수단으로 이집트 신화, 북구 신화, 동북아시아 신화가 등장해 사건을 촘촘하게 엮어간다.

이 소설은 김진경 작가의 고양이가 죽기 전 집을 떠나자 슬퍼하는 딸에게 들려주기 위해 지은 이야기에서 시작되었다고 한다. 열여섯 살이 된 늙은 고양이가 집을 떠나는 것이 죽으러 가는 것이 아닌 고양이들만의 세계에서 새로운 여정을 시작하려 한다는 상상이 출발점이었던 것이다. 그 때문에 1부의 주인공은 고양이 버들이다. 버들이가 민준이와 세나의 집에서 나와 고양이 학교에 들어가고, 고양이들의 역사와 사회, 문화를 배우며 사건이 전개된다.

3부에 걸쳐 버들이와 수정 고양이들이 모험을 하면서 고양이 버들이의 옛 주인인 민준과 세나의 비중이 점점 커진다. 1부에서는 주변 인물로 등장하지만 2부에서는 고양이들을 적극적으로 돕고, 3부에서는 새로운 주인공이 된다. 사람들의 이야기를 풀어 가면서 초반의 환상 세계 보에서 현실 세계의 비중이 커지는 구조다. 민준과 세나가 사는 현실 세계는 한국 사회에서 쉽게 접할 수 있는 문제와 인물들을 그린다. 김진경 작가는 예스24와의 인터뷰에서 동화에서 현실 이야기를 하는 것에 관해 이야기 한 바 있다.

“현실을 반영하지 않는 판타지 동화는 그냥 재미있는 이야기일 뿐이라고 생각해요. 『고양이 학교』는 어린이들에게 뭔가 전하고 싶은 주제가 있어 쓴 이야기예요. 어린이들도 현실을 분명히 알아야 하고 그것을 전달하는 건 작가의 의무라고 생각합니다. 그러다 보니 점점 판타지보다 현실에 가까워지는 것 같아요.”

사건의 배경뿐만 아니라 <고양이 학교> 시리즈가 갖는 특별함은 이야기 전개에서도 찾을 수 있다. 우리가 접하는 많은 아동·청소년 문학이 주인공의 모험을 통한 성장 서사를 조명한다면, 이 책에서는 주인공들의 회복담을 들려준다. 애초에 고양이 버들이가 열여섯의 성묘라는 사실을 생각했을 때, 그리 놀라운 사실은 아니다. 시리즈에 걸쳐 다루는 인간과 다른 생물들의 공생관계와 그 발전에 대한 이야기는 주인공들의 내면과 더 넓게는 주인공들이 몸담은 세계의 회복과 관련되어있다.

동화에서는 그림 또한 빼놓을 수 없는 요소이다. <고양이 학교>에서는 김재홍 작가의 그림을 통해 다양한 고양이들의 모습을 만날 수 있다. 다양한 고양이 종의 세심한 표현은 물론이고, 생생한 표정이나 몸짓까지 이야기와 딱 어울리는 삽화를 선보인다.

동화는 아이들의 전유물이 아니다. <고양이 학교>의 독특하고 새로운 매력은 누구나 반할만하다.

<A Healing Journey with Cats>

Reviewed Book: Cat School (Kim Jin-Kyoung)

The <Cat School> trilogy is the first fantasy fairy tale series written in Korea. <Cat School> still seems like a breath of fresh air to the Korean mainstream literary world which is barren in fantasy genres, as it did in 2001 when it was first released. The world of <Cat School>, which is introduced over eleven books (five volumes in the first part, and three volumes each in part two and three), is certainly different from the familiar Western fantasy style that we encountered with various media. First of all, the setting of the cat world is based on harmony; the core of Eastern philosophy. On top of this, Egyptian mythology, Northern Chinese mythology, and Northeast Asian mythology are used as tools to weave the various aspects and stories of cats.

The novel is said to have started from a story written to tell her sad daughter when Kim Jin-kyung's cat left home before she died. The imagination that the 16-year old cat was not leaving home to die, but instead starting a new journey in the world of cats was the starting point. Because of this, the main character of the first part is cat ‘willow’. The story evolves as willow leaves Minjun and Senna's house and enters a cat school, learning the history, society, and culture of cats.

The importance of Minjun and Senna, the past owners of cat willow, increases significantly as willow and the crystal cats start on an adventure. They appear as the surrounding characters in part one but actively help cats in part two, eventually turning into the new main character of the story in part three. This is a structure in which the importance of the real world increases in the initial fantasy world as humans’ stories are elaborated. The real world where Minjun and Senna live depicts the problems and people that are easily encountered in Korean society. The author Kim Jin-kyung have talked about telling the reality in fairy tales in an interview with yes24.

"I think fantasy fairy tales that do not reflect reality are just fun stories. <Cat School> is a story I wrote because I had some topics which I wanted to tell children. I think children should clearly know the reality and it is the writer's duty to deliver it. Maybe it is the reason why it's getting closer to reality than fantasy."

The uniqueness of <Cat School> series can be found in the story development as well as the background of the incident. While many of the children and youth literature we encounter shed light on the growth narrative of the main characters through adventure, this book tells us the story of their recovery. It's not surprising when you remember the fact that cat willow is a full grown cat of sixteen. The story of the symbiosis of humans and other creatures and their development throughout the series are related to the inner side of the main characters and furthermore to the restoration of the world which they live in.

Pictures are also an essential element in fairy tales. In <Cat School>, you can see a variety of cats in the picture of Kim Jae-hong. Not only the careful expressions of various cat breeds are shown, but vivid expressions and gestures are also illustrated to match the story.

Fairy tales are not exclusive properties of children. The unique and fresh attraction of <Cat School> is irresistible for everyone.
