1. Coraline, Neil Gaiman

The terror of Coraline is in that the source of fear is not from the ugly, but from the desired. When Coraline walks through a small door into a world that looks like her own, but more colourful and full of joy, she does not realize this. Thus she does not recognize the evil disguised as love and walks knee-deep into the danger.

Of course, the people of the other world have buttons for eyes, but that is not a real reason to fear anything for Coraline. For children’s best friends often have buttons for eyes—the dolls. The other world is a place designed to tempt and lure a child, and the abnormalities for adults are hidden under the normalities for children.

Which is why it is not until change comes to the real world that Coraline gets the hint. And it is not until then that the other mother reveals her true form as a monster. This is the point where Coraline differs from other books meant to give the thrill of terror to children. The tragic horror books provoke a terror of the abnormal. Coraline provokes a terror of the uncanny.

It is as if the book tries to teach the children the fears that can be found in reality. While most books teach children to grow up to fear the things that are not there, such as the boogieman, hairy monster, or random giants, Coraline teaches that a mother’s love can be smothering, desires devouring, and innocence misleading.

2. Carrie, Stephen King

A classic horror story, yet unique in that the terror is not in the evil, but in the victim. Carrie, born to a fiercely religious mother, grows in ignorance of what all teenagers know. For this, she is always bullied, and when her first menstruation happens in the midst of this, the blood triggers a supernatural reaction.

Jump forward, and Carrie is once again covered in blood, this time by the bullies, and the supernatural reaction becomes something more than just a reaction, but a truly terrifying event that kills most of the town. Perhaps it is the explosion of a growth that had been suppressed by the mother, or simply the explosion of anger that had never been properly expressed toward her bullies. And an excess of anything, whether it can be justified or not, is always terrifying.

Actually, it is more terrifying because it can be justified. Evil has always been something that cannot be accepted by the world or something that the world rightly shuns. But in Carrie, the evil and the terror do not go together. For this, the story, although classic in its ways of horror and description of violence, is a story of its own quality.

3. The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood

Atwood’s novel is not something classified as a horror story, but it is worth the introduction because we do not deal with horror stories in this issue, but books that provoke terror. And I can assure our readers that out of all books I have recently read, none has provoked more terror in me than The Handmaid’s Tale.

Set in a near future where birth rates are drastically low, the book deals with the story of a ‘fertile’ woman forced to bear children for the aristocrats of the society. The Handmaids, as they are called. Those who are not handmaids are classified as Aunts, who train handmaids, Marthas, the domestic servants, and so on. The society is an extreme patriarchal one, and the treatment of women is pure horror.

Knowing the fact that the author used only instances that have existed for some time in some place in the human world doubles the fear. The terrifying world that can be read in the book is a world that has once existed, and may yet exist. Reading the book may be a difficult job for some, as every incident in the story is choking.

The Hulu show that adapted the book, now in its second season, is also recommended. With more details than the book and adapted to fit the world today, the show is clearly not binge-worthy. No one can watch more than one episode of the show in a row—the fear is too much of a burden. Thus I introduce The Handmaid’s Tale as a book that provokes terror.

<공포를 유발하는 소설들>

1. <코럴라인>, 닐 게이먼

<코럴라인>이 공포스러운 이유는 두려움의 대상이 추악한 것이 아닌, 바랐던 것이기 때문이다. 작은 문을 통과해 자신의 세계와 비슷하되 더 즐겁고 화사한 곳으로 걸어 들어간 코럴라인은 이를 알지 못하였다. 사랑으로 위장한 악을 몰라봤기에 코럴라인은 위험 속으로 자진해서 들어간다.

물론 새로운 세계의 사람들은 눈이 있어야 할 자리에 단추가 달려있었지만, 코럴라인이 이를 두려워할 이유는 없다. 어린아이들의 단짝친구도 그렇기 때문이다. 바로 인형들 말이다. 이 다른 세계는 아이들을 유혹하고 유인하기 위한 곳으로, 어른들에게 이상한 것들이 아이들에게는 익숙하게만 느껴진다.

그렇기에 현실세계가 변화하기 시작할 때야 비로소 코럴라인이 낌새를 눈치채기 시작한다. 그리고 이때 다른 엄마가 괴물인 본 모습을 드러낸다. 이 점에서 코럴라인은 아이들에게 공포심을 심어주는 다른 소설들과는 다르다. 다른 비극적인 공포소설들은 대놓고 기이하고 비정상적인 것에서 공포를 그리지만, ‘코럴라인’은 조금 더 묘한 부분에서 공포심을 자극한다.

어쩌면 이 소설은 아이들에게 현실에도 공포가 있다는 것을 가르치려는 것이 아닐까. 대다수의 책이 아이들에게 도깨비나 귀신, 식인 괴물 등 허구적인 존재의 공포를 가르치지만 <코렐라인>은 어머니의 사랑이 아이를 억누르고, 어머니의 열망은 아이를 집어삼키며 순진함은 오도할 수 있다는 것을 얘기한다.

2. <캐리>, 스티븐 킹

고전적인 공포소설이나 두려움의 대상이 악이 아니라 피해라자른 점에서 독특하다. 끔찍하게 독실한 어머니에게 태어난 캐리는 다른 청소년들이 모두 아는 것에 대해 무지하다. 이 때문에 그녀는 항상 따돌림 당하고, 그 와중에 첫번째 월경을 겪자 피로 인해 초자연적인 반응을 일으킨다.

시간이 지나 괴롭힘을 당한 캐리가 다시 한번 피를 뒤집어 쓰게 되자, 초자연적인 반응은 그저 한순간의 현상이 아닌 마을 사람들을 학살하는 두려운 재해가 된다. 이는 어머니에게 억압 당했던 성장이 폭발한 것 일수도, 그녀를 괴롭힌 학생들에게 내비치지 못했던 분노의 폭발일 수도 있다. 무엇이든, 정당하든 아니든, 도를 넘어선 것은 언제나 두렵다.

실은 정당화할 수 있기 때문에 더 두려운 것일 수도 있다. 악은 마땅히 멀리해야 할 존재이기에 세상은 이를 받아들이지 않는다. 하지만‘캐리’에서의 악과 공포는 동일선상의 개념이 아니다. 이렇기에 이 소설은 공포와 유혈의 묘사에 있어선 고전적이어도 소설로서는 독보적이라 할 수 있다.

3. <시녀 이야기>, 마거릿 애트우드

애트우드의 소설은 사실 공포 소설은 아니지만, 공포를 유발하는 소설이라는 점에서 소개할 가치가 있다. 내가 최근 읽은 책 중에서 <시녀 이야기>만큼 나를 공포에 떨게 만든 소설은 없었다는 것을 독자들에게 담보할 수 있다.

이 이야기는 출산율이 극단적으로 낮은 미래에서 권력자들에게 아이를 낳아주어야 하는 ‘가임’ 여성들을 다룬다. 그들은 시녀라고 불린다. 시녀가 아닌 이들에는 시녀를 훈련하는 아주머니들이나 집안일을 돕는 하녀 등이 있다. 소설 속의 사회는 극심하게 가부장적이며, 여성들에 대한 대우는 공포 그 자체이다.

작가가 언제 어디선가에 실제로 있었던 일들을 토대로 글을 썼다는 것을 안다면 이 공포는 배가된다. 책 속의 끔찍한 세상은 한때 존재했었고 또 미래에 도래할 수도 있는 사회이다. 소설 속의 매 사건사건이 독자의 목을 졸라오는 느낌이 들어, 어떤 이들에게는 이 책을 읽는 것이 힘들 수 있다.

책을 기반으로 만들어진 훌루의 드라마 역시 추천한다. 소설보다 풍성한 디테일을 갖추고 현대 사회에 맞게 각색된 이 드라마는 절대로 몰아서 볼 수는 없을 것이다. 어깨를 무겁게 짓눌러오는 공포 탓에 그 누구도 이 드라마를 한번에 한 화 이상 볼 수 없을터이다. 그렇기에 나는 <시녀 이야>를 공포를 유발하는 소설로 소개한다.
