어느 날 사람이 죽었다! 범인은 누구일까? - 추리 애니메이션 <명탐정 코난>

유독 여름에는 공포/호러물이 인기가 많다. 영화나 뮤지컬을 보거나 전시회를 관람하는 방법도 있지만 편하게 집에서 무료로 시청할 수 있으며 충분히 스릴을 느낄 수 있는 애니메이션 ‘명탐정 코난’을 소개하려 한다. <명탐정 코난>은 아오야마 고쇼가 그린 만화로, 애니메이션으로도 방영되고 있다. 주인공은 고교생 탐정 ‘쿠도 신이치’에서 독약을 먹어 몸이 작아져 버린 ‘에도가와 코난’, 신이치의 단짝 친구 ‘모리 란’, 란의 아버지이자 탐정인 ‘모리 코고로’이다. 소개는 이쯤 하고 ‘명탐정 코난’ 시리즈에서 정말 볼 만한 공포 에피소드 3개를 소개할까 한다.

TOP 3 184화 저주의 가면은 차갑게 웃는다 (1시간 스페셜)

유명한 음악 프로듀서이자 자선사업가 ‘스오우 베니코’는 교통사고 유족 자선 모임에 모리 코고로를 초대한다. 모리 부녀와 코난은 베니코의 저택에 간다. 이곳에는 ‘저주의 가면’이라 불리는 ‘슈블의 가면’이 200점이나 보관되어 있다. 저주의 가면은 소문에 의하면 그 주인의 피를 빨아먹는다고 한다. 며칠 전 ‘저주의 가면의 사자’로부터 가면의 주인인 베니코를 죽이겠다는 경고가 있었다. 베니코는 이런 협박이 자주 있었다며 괜찮다고 하지만, 그날 베니코는 문이 잠겨 있던 그의 침실에서 살해된다. 슈블의 가면이 그를 향해 수북이 어지럽게 놓여 있는 상태에서 말이다. 마치 가면이 그를 공격하려 한 것처럼…

범인은 유명한 록 가수인 ‘아이카와 토우야’였다. 그는 저택에 초대된 다른 손님 ‘카타키리 마사키’의 아내를 뺑소니 사고로 20년 전 죽인 범인이 베니코이며 베니코가 그의 어머니에게 죄를 뒤집어씌워 어머니가 자살했다는 것을 알게 되고 이 일을 계획했다고 한다. 놀라운 건 트릭이다. 범인은 창문 틈새 사이로 고무줄을 안으로 넣고 200개가 넘는 얇은 가면을 통과시켰다. 줄을 당기면 가면은 차례대로 겹쳐져 엄청난 길이가 된다. 고무줄의 끝에 칼을 달아 창문 밖에서 베니코를 찌른 것이다. 그 뒤 고무줄을 자르고 회수하면 사건현장과 같은 모습이 되는 것. 베니코의 피가 한 가면에만 제대로 묻고 뒤의 가면에는 별로 묻지 않았던 것도 이 이유다.

크게 무섭지는 않지만, 설정이 기괴하고 트릭이 매우 기발하다. 특히 줄을 당겼을 때 가면이 겹쳐지는 것을 보고 소름이 돋는다.

TOP 2 50화 도서관 살인사건

코난과 그와 같은 반 친구들 ‘아유미’, ‘겐타’, ‘미츠히코’는 도서관을 방문한다. 그곳에는 수상한 도서관 관장 ‘츠가와 슈지’가 있었다. 마침 도서관 직원 ‘타마다 카즈오’가 행방불명이 되어 경찰 측은 도서관을 조사하지만 아무것도 발견되지 않는다. 코난과 친구들은 밤중에 몰래 도서관에 들어오며 그 안에서 츠가와 관장을 발견하게 된다. 관장이 직원을 죽인 범인임을 눈치챈 코난 일행은 살인 동기와 직원의 시체를 찾으려 한다. 그런데 겐타의 실수로 도서관 불을 켜 버리고, 집으로 돌아가려던 관장은 갑자기 켜진 불을 보고 아연실색한다. 그는 가던 발길을 멈추고 다시 도서관으로 돌아가는데…

범인은 처음부터 무척 수상해 보이는 츠가와 관장이다. 이 에피소드의 백미는 중간중간 비치는 관장의 얼굴이다. 코난 일행이 지나갈 때 뒤에서 미행하는 그의 얼굴은 무섭게 느껴질 정도이다. 등표지가 없는 책들을 가운데에 비치해 그 안에 마약을 넣은 트릭도 간단하지만 기발하다. 그리고 직원의 시체를 찾는 도중 코난의 머릿속에 엘리베이터 장면이 오버랩 될 때 소름이 돋는다. 엘리베이터 아래에 있는 시체를 찾고 자신만만하던 코난 뒤에 관장이 엘리베이터를 타고 올라오는 순간 역시 공포스럽게 느껴질 만하다. 앞에서도 말했듯이 여기서도 관장의 표정이 압권이다.

TOP 1 34-35화 산장 붕대남 살인사건

레전드 화. ‘명탐정 코난’에서 제일 무서운 에피소드가 무엇이냐고 물어보면 대부분 이 에피소드를 꼽는다.

란의 친구 ‘스즈키 소노코’의 초대로 란과 코난은 스즈키 별장에 간다. 그런데 란과 코난은 가던 도중 검은 망토를 입고 붕대로 얼굴을 감싼 남자를 목격한다. 다른 사람들에게 물어본 결과 모두 그런 남자는 본 적이 없다고 한다. 착각인가 싶은 찰나에 일행 중 한 명인 ‘이케다 치카코’가 모두가 보는 눈앞에서 붕대남에게 납치당한다. 놀란 일행은 밖으로 나와 치카코를 찾는다. 그들이 발견한 것은 치카코의 손, 발, 그리고 목이었다. 치카코는 붕대남에게 토막살인을 당한 것이었다.

산장붕대남은 없었다. 그것은 일행 중 한 명인 ‘타카하시 료이치’가 붕대남으로 변장해 모두가 보는 눈앞에서 치카코를 납치한 것이었다. 더불어 이 범인은 치카코를 토막 살인해 그의 목을 자신의 옷 안에 넣고 다녔다! 이 트릭을 위해 지금까지 뚱뚱한 척했던 것이다. 그러나 그가 옷을 갈아입는 것을 란이 실수로 보자 자신이 범인인 게 들킬까 두려워 란을 세 차례나 공격한다. 범인은 몇 년 전 죽은 친구의 복수를 위해 치카코를 죽였다고 밝혔다. 그러면서 자신은 정의의 사도이고, 자신도 죽은 친구를 따라 저세상으로 가겠다고 하며 자살하려 한다. 그때 코난은 이렇게 말한다. “당신이 친구를 위해 살인을 저질렀는지는 몰라도 무고한 란을 죽이려 한 것을 보면 당신은 두려웠던 거에요. 당신은 정의의 사도도 뭐도 아냐. 자신의 행각이 들킬까 두려워 남을 죽이려 한 그저 피에 굶주린 잔인하고 추악한 살인귀일 뿐이야…!”

토막살인에, 목을 배 위에 넣고 다녔다는 역겨운 트릭에, 자신이 정의의 사도인 줄 아는 미친 범인까지…잔인하고 어이없는 사건이다.

미처 소개하지 못한 52화 ‘키리텐구 전설 살인사건’, 136화 ‘푸른 고성 탐색 사건’, 754~756화 ‘붉은 여자의 참극’, 46화 ‘설산 산장 살인 사건’ 등도 꽤 무섭고 볼 만하다.

Murder! Whodunit? - Detective Anime Series Case Closed(Detective Conan)

**The following article includes spoilers. Readers who do not wish to be spoiled may just read the episodes’ titles and watch them.

Horror stories are especially popular in summer. You could watch movies, musicals, or go to exhibitions, but I would like to introduce Case Closed, an animated manga series that’s free, equally thrilling, and watchable in a comfy seat at home. Case Closed is a manga by Gosho Aoyama, and has also been adapted into an animated series. The protagonists are ‘Shinichi Kudo,’ who has shrunk after taking poison and assumes the alias ‘Conan Edogawa’, his best friend ‘Ran Mouri,’ and her father, Detective ‘Kogoro Mouri.’ Now, enough of the introductions, and on to the three best horror episodes of the Case Closed series.

Top 3: Ep. 184, A Cursed Mask Laughs Coldly (1 hour special)

Famous music producer and philanthropist ‘ShouBeniko’ invites KogoroMouri to a charity party for the families of car accident victims. The Mouri family and Conan go to Beniko’s mansion. 200 ‘Shobel’s Masks,’ also known as the ‘cursed mask’, are there. According to rumors, the cursed mask sucks the blood of its owner. A few days before the party, Beniko, the owner of the masks, had received a death threat from the ‘Phantom of the Cursed Masks’. Beniko says that she’s alright, dismissing it as just one of the many times she’d received such a threat, but that night, Beniko is found murdered in her bedroom, which had been locked. There were scattered stacks of Shobel’s Masks around, all facing towards her body. Almost as if the masks were trying to attack her…

The culprit was the famous rock singer ‘AikawaTouya.’ He confessed that he planned the crime after finding out that Beniko was the culprit of a hit-and-run accident that killed the wife of ‘Katagiri Masaki’ and that Beniko had framed Touya’s mother, leading to her suicide. What is intriguing about this case is the murderer’s trick. He stringed over 200 masks to a rubber band he put in through the slightly open window. When the band was pulled, the masks overlapped and extended into a great length. At the end of the string, a knife had been hung to stab Beniko from outside the window. Once the string was cut and retrieved, it would look exactly the same as the crime scene Conan found. This is also the reason why Beniko’s blood was smeared only on one mask, and not so much on the others.

The episode is not very scary, but the setting is eerie and the trick is ingenious. The extension of the masks when the string is pulled, especially was a scene that makes you get goosebumps.

Top2: Ep. 50, The Book Without Pages (Library Murder Case)

Conan and his classmates ‘Ayumi,’ ‘Genta,’ and ‘Mitsuhiko’ visit a library, where a very fishy Head Librarian named ‘Shuji Tsugawa’ was working. Coincidentally, a library worker called ‘Kazuo Tamada’ goes missing, and the police search the library to no avail. Conan and his friends try to sneak into the library at night and find Head Librarian Tsugawa. Conan and his friends, realizing that the Head Librarian was the culprit, try to find the criminal’s motive and the missing body. In the process, Genta accidentally switches the library’s light on and the Head Librarian, whle on his way home, turns pale when he sees the light. He stops in his tracks and begins heading back to the library.

The culprit was the head librarian Tsugawa, who seemed suspicious from the very start. The highlight of this episode is the Head Librarian’s expression that’s occasionally zoomed in for a close up. His face, when he secretly tails Conan and his friends, is almost too horrifying. The trick of putting books without backspins together in the middle to put drugs in them was simple yet brilliant. When the elevator scene is played over in Conan’s mind as he searches for the body of the worker, the show becomes truly terrifying. The moment the head librarian comes out of the elevator right behind Conan, exalting in his discovery of the corpse concealed under the elevator, is also creepy. As aforementioned, the Head Librarian’s expression is the most unforgettable part in this scene as well.

Top1: Ep, 34-35, Mountain Villa Murder (Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case)

Pure legend. If someone asks what the scariest episode in Case Closed is, this would be what most fans point to.

Ran’s friend ‘Sonoko Suzuki’ invites Ran and Conan to the Suzuki family’s mountain villa. On their way there, Ran and Conan witness a black cloaked man whose face is completely wrapped up by bandages. Apparently, none of the others have seen such a figure. Just as they are brushing it off as just a trick of the eye, ‘Chikako Ikeda,’ a member of the company, is kidnapped by the bandaged man right in plain sight. Taken completely aback, the party goes out to find Chikako. What they end up finding is Chikako’s severed hands, feet, and head. Chikako had been dismembered by the bandaged man.

There was no ‘bandaged man’. It turns out ‘Ryoichi Takahashi,’ a member of the company, had disguised himself as the bandaged man and kidnapped Chikako as everyone was watching. Furthermore, this culprit dismembered Chikako and even carried the head around beneath his clothes! He had pretended to be fat until now just for this trick. But when Ran accidentally witnesses him changing, he attacks her three times in fear that he might get caught. He confesses that he killed Chikako to avenge his friend who had died a few years ago. Then he says that he is a vigilante, and tries to commit suicide, saying that he will join his dead friend. Conan replies, “You might have committed murder for your friends, but seeing that you tried to kill innocent Ran, you were just afraid. You are not a vigilante, or anything else. You are just a violent and hideous devil thirsty for blood who tried to kill someone just because you were scared you might get caught…!”

From mutilation to the disgusting trick of carrying a decapitated head around, and the lunatic who was convinced he’s a vigilante… It was a cruel and flabbergasting case.

Although not introduced in this article, Ep. 52, “The Mist Goblin Legend Murder Case,” Ep. 136, “The Old Blue Castle Investigation Case,” Ep. 754-756, “The Tragedy of the Red Woman,” and Ep. 46, “Alpine Hut in the Snowy Mountain Murder Case” are also quite scary and binge-worthy.
