Gothic, Evil, and Gore—Penny Dreadful

Every gothic-lover would have at least once wished that their favourite gothic characters could come together on screen without it being a comedically ‘scary’ movie. I mean, we all know that our precious Creature (not Frankenstein!) or Dorian, Count Dracula, and Jekyll (or Hyde, if you like) are more than just, well… evil. Or bloodthirsty. We all know the gothic is more than just blood and screams and death. That’s why Penny Dreadful is a show welcome to all of our breed.

Of course, to bring so diverse characters into one story, the original story has to be good. That’s why our favourite gothic characters are all there, but are not the main characters. Instead, Penny Dreadful comes up with the brilliantly charming Vanessa Ives, Ethan Chandler, and Malcolm Murray. Together, they question what it truly means to be evil. Is it evil to turn away from God? Do bloody crimes make a person evil? Or does evil make a person do ‘evil’ things?

In that sense, although Vanessa Ives is the centre of all stories, I think Ethan Chandler would be the character that fits the questions best. Always hunting for a person to take care of, Ethan Chandler is the one who helps Sir Malcolm realize that Vanessa is already his family, and would cross oceans upon knowing that she is in danger. If the enemy be a child, he would fight with his allies over acts of violence. If the enemy be a woman, he would hesitate. If a passing person is in danger of being hit by a carriage, he would throw himself. Before he turns into a werewolf, he makes sure those who he cares for are out of the way of danger. Ethan Chandler is just a generally such a nice person in the most realistic sense.

At the same time, though, he is a person who has killed Indians. He is a person who has led a raid against his own family. He is a person who is a foretold evil. But from his first appearance in the show to his last, it is difficult to think of him as a ‘bad’ person. So then, what does it mean to be evil?

Now let’s look at Vanessa. She is naturally born with the tendency of evil. She is ‘touched’ by the devil, and the ancient words of black magic come to her naturally. Yet she tries to stay true to her belief in God. She is a person who knows that although evil is what she is, that does not mean that she should succumb to that, both through experience, and through the belief that she was born into. She knows of the evil in her, and goes through physical pain to not give into that, to not hurt those around her. Is a person who can face one’s evil, and go against every cell in her body to stop that evil, be a truly ‘evil’ person?

The show continuously has its characters ponder over their identity, and what value they should follow. Creature sometimes joins in such moments, of what it means to be a monster, while Dorian is a person who has admitted what he is through his endless life, and does not try to change. Meanwhile Frankenstein is a person who does not even question such values if it be for science, and Jekyll is Victor’s soulmate who shared similar dreams in university.

And of course, added on to such depth are all the gores and horrors of the gothic genre. Penny Dreadful is rated R, and rightly so. Heads are ripped off, and not in the exaggerated B rated horror movie way, but in a way that would convince audience that they now know what it looks like when a head is ripped off, without the firsthand experience. Guns and swords are mere jokes. People are burned and hanged. But the scariest of all, is Eva Green’s acting. Vanessa Ives is quiet often possessed by the devil, and Eva Green acts it out in a way scarier than in any other demon-possession-horror movie, for she becomes a character who is not just ‘possessed’ by the evil, but is having to push down the evil within. So I guess I would have to warn those who are on their way to watch this show, even if they are a gothic-lover. This show is truly scary.

Penny Dreadful is consisted of three seasons. It started in 2014 and unfortunately, the final episode was aired in 2016. But it is on Netflix, and can be seen in Korea too. <고딕, 악, 그리고 고어 — 페니 드레드풀>

고딕 장르를 좋아하는 사람이라면 한 번쯤은 그들이 애정하는 고딕 소설 등장인물들이 코미디가 아닌 스크린에서 만나기를 원했을 것이다. 우리의 사랑스러운 괴물(프랑켄슈타인이 아닌!)이나 도리안, 드라큘라 백작, 그리고 지킬(또는 하이드) 같은 캐릭터들은 그저 악하거나 피에 굶주린 것만은 아니라는 것을 우리는 잘 알고 있으니까 말이다. 고딕 장르는 그저 선혈이 낭자하고 비명이 울려 퍼지는 것이 아니다. 그렇기 때문에 <페니 드레드풀>은 우리 같은 사람들에게 너무나도 반가운 드라마이다.

물론 다양한 캐릭터들을 하나의 스토리에 등장시키려면 기본적인 이야기 자체가 잘 구성되어야 한다. 그렇기 때문에 우리의 사랑스러운 고딕 캐릭터들은 등장하되, 주연으로 활약하지는 않는다. ‘페니 드레드풀’은 지극히 매력적인 바네사 아이브스, 이단 찬들러, 그리고 말콤 머레이 이 세 명을 주연으로 활용한다. 그들은 함께 악하다는 것이 무엇인지 알아 나간다. 신에게서 멀어지는 것이 악할까? 피튀기는 범죄를 저지르면 그 사람이 악해질까? 또는 악 그 자체가 사람에게 악을 강요하는 것일까?

그런 의미에서는 사건의 중심인 바네사 아이브스보다는 이단 찬들러가 작품의 탐문과 들어맞는다. 언제나 도움이 필요한 사람을 사냥하는 이단은 말콤 경이 바네사가 이미 자신의 가족이라는 것을 깨닫게 도우며, 또한 바네사가 위험에 빠졌다면 바다를 횡단하여 찾아가고도 남을 것이다. 적이 어린 아이라면, 이단은 그에 대한 폭력을 놓고 자신의 동료들과도 싸울 것이다. 적이 여성이라면, 그는 주저할 것이다. 지나가는 사람이 마차에 치일 위기에 처해 있다면, 그는 몸을 던져서 그것을 막을 것이다. 늑대인간으로 변신하기 전에도 이단은 그가 위하는 사람들이 안전한 곳에 있다는 것을 꼭 확인한다. 이단 찬들러는 현실적으로 그저 너무나도 착하고 좋은 사람일 뿐이다.

동시에 이단은 과거에 아메리카 대륙의 원주민들을 죽였다. 그는 자신의 가족을 대상으로 습격을 단행했다. 그는 예언되었던 악인 사람이다. 하지만 드라마에 처음 등장한 순간부터 마지막 순간까지, 그를 ‘나쁜’ 사람이라 생각하기는 힘들다. 그렇다면 악하다는 것은 어떤 의미일까?

바네사는 어떨까? 그녀는 악을 지니고 태어났다. 악마에게 ‘만져졌고’ 흑마법의 고대 주문들은 그녀에게 자연스럽게만 느껴진다. 그런데도 그녀는 자신의 신에게 진실하려 노력한다. 그녀는 자신이 악이라는 것을 알고 있음에도 불구하고 경험을 통해, 그리고 태어날 때부터 가지고 있던 신앙을 통해 악에 굴복하려 하지 않으려 하는 사람이다. 그녀는 자신이 지니고 있는 악을 알고 그 악을 다른 사람에게 해를 끼치게 하지 않기 위해 육체적인 고통까지도 감수한다. 본인의 악을 똑바로 마주하고 그 악을 막기 위해 몸부림치는 사람이 진정 ‘악한’ 사람일까?

이 드라마는 캐릭터들로 하여금 자신들의 정체성과 가치에 대하여 고민하게 한다. 프랑켄슈타인의 괴물은 이따금씩 만들어진 괴물인 자신에 대해 고민하고, 반대로 도리안은 죽지 않는 자신의 모습을 받아들이고 변화를 꾀하지 않는다. 빅터 프랑켄슈타인은 과학을 위해서라면 그런 가치 따위는 신경 쓰지 않는 인물이며, 지킬 박사 또한 대학교 시절 비슷한 이상을 가졌던 빅터의 소울메이트이다.

그리고 이 모든 깊이감에는 고딕 장르의 고어와 호러가 끼얹어져 있다. ‘페니 드레드풀’은 19금이고 그러할 여지가 충분하다. 이 드라마에서 머리가 뜯겨나가면 과장된 B급 정서가 아닌, 관객에게 실제 경험 없이 인간에 머리가 뜯겨 나가면 어떤 광경이 연출될지 알려주는 수준에서 액션이 표현된다. 총과 칼은 아이들 장난에 불가하다. 사람들이 화형당하고 교수당한다. 하지만 어쩌면 가장 공포스러운 것은 에바 그린의 연기이다. 바네가 아이브스는 꽤 자주 악마에게 몸을 빼앗기고, 이는 그저 악에 씐 사람이 아니라 속에 지니고 있는 악을 싸우는 사람의 모습이라 에바 그린의 연기는 어떤 전형적인 호러 영화의 귀신에 홀린 연기보다도 소름 끼친다. 따라서 아무리 고딕 장르의 팬이라 해도 이 드라마를 보기 전에는 마음의 준비를 하는 것을 추천한다. 이 드라마는 진심으로 무섭다.

‘페니 드레드풀’은 세 개의 시즌이 있다. 2014년에 방영을 시작했으며 안타깝게도 2016도에 마지막 화를 방영했다. 하지만 이는 현재 넷플릭스에 올라와 있으며 한국에서도 시청할 수 있다. 넷플릭스 코리아에는 한글 자막도 있으니 이 기사를 읽은 사람들은 어서 핸드폰, 태블릿, 또는 컴퓨터를 꺼내 시청을 시작하기 바란다.
