고담, 정의가 탄생하는 곳

1937년 DC 코믹스의 간판 시리즈인 디텍티브 코믹스가 출간되고, 27번째 이슈에 배트맨이 소개되었다. 어느덧 첫 디텍티브 코믹스로부터 약 80년 정도가 흘렀고, 배트맨과 고담은 이제 떼려야 뗄 수 없는 관계를 갖는다. 뉴52 배트맨 타이틀을 비롯한 다양한 작품에서 고담이 배트맨의 무대라는 의미를 넘어 배트맨 그 자체와 결부되기도 하는 것처럼 말이다.

뉴52 배트맨의 이슈 #1 은 고담이 무엇인지에 대한 고담 시민들의 생각과 함께 시작한다. 배트맨은 독백으로 고담 가제트에 “고담은 ( ) 이다.”라는 오래된 코너를 소개하면서 시민들이 어떤 단어를 제보했는지 알려준다. 고담은 지랄 맞고, 저주받았고, 아수라장이며, 살인적이다. 고담은 공포다. 이는 고담을 정의할 수 있는 수많은 단어 중에 많은 사람들이 가장 쉽게 떠올릴만한 말이다. 그렇다면 무엇이 고담을 DC 세계관에서 공포의 상징으로 만들고, 더 나아가 ‘무서운 도시’를 가리키는 가장 대중적인 비유로 만들었을까?

우선 고담에서 벌어지는 일들이 질문에 대한 답이 될 것이다. 폭스에서 제작한 DC 드라마 고담에서는 배트맨이 존재하기 이전의 고담을 그린다. 고담 경찰청장 짐 고든이 아직 경관이었고, 브루스 웨인이 막 부모님을 잃었을 적의 일이다. 배트맨의 이야기 속 수많은 빌런들이 있기 전에도 고담은 그다지 살기 좋은 도시는 아니었다. 마피아나 갱단이 도시 곳곳에 손을 뻗은 채 도시를 틀어쥐고 있었기 때문이다. 짐 고든이 경관이던 시절부터 경찰청장인 시점까지, 고담은 여전히 범죄의 도시다. 슈퍼맨이 있는 매트로폴리스나 그린 랜턴의 코스트 시티가 가끔 우주적 존재의 위협을 걱정해야 한다면 고담은 매일 해가 진 후의 골목골목을 걱정해야 한다.

드라마고담을 포함한 여타 배트맨 시리즈에서 도시의 잦고, 현실적이고, 종종 엽기적인 범죄는 고담을 대표하고는 한다. 리버스 배트맨의 첫 번째 볼륨에서 고담과 고담걸이 이를 잘 보여주는 대표적인 예이다. 어느 날 갑자기 초인적인 힘과 함께 등장한 고담과 고담걸은 배트맨과 비슷한 과거를 공유한다. 고담은 브루스와 마찬가지로 어릴 적 강도를 만나 아버지를 잃었고, 어머니마저 잃을뻔한다. 하지만 브루스가 속수무책으로 부모님을 잃었다면, 고담에게는 배트맨이 있었다. 배트맨은 죽을 뻔한 고담의 어머니를 구해내고, 두려움에 떠는 고담에게 공포를 이겨낼 기회가 있음을 일깨워준다. 고담이 여동생과 트라우마와 감정을 나누고, 그들은 배트맨처럼 고담을 구하는 일에 힘을 쓰고자 한다. 배트맨이 고담과 고담걸의 정체를 안 후에, 두려움을 이겨낸 것을 축하하는 장면이 있다. 고담은 자신의 도시를 더 나은 곳으로 만들기 시작하면서 고담의 공포를 이겨낸 인물이다.

고담이 처음 히어로 활동을 시작하던 시점의 모습을 ‘고담을 극복했다’라고 표현할 수 있다면, 배트맨이 그의 트라우마를 극복하는 방식은 고담 자체가 되는 것이었다. 배트맨은 또 다른 공포의 상징이다. 공포의 상징이 된 배트맨은 시민들 사이에서 도시 전설로 표현되고는 하는데, 이가 그가 갖는 공포의 상징성을 부각한다. 고담 시민들의 입장에서 배트맨은 하나의 인물이라기보다는 범죄자를 위협하는 전설적인 존재로 받아들이고는 한다는 것이다. 배트맨은 공포를 이용해 범죄자들, 혹은 잠재적 범죄자들을 막는다. 배트맨은 고담과 닮았다.

고담은 공포의 도시지만, 고담에 사는 인물들은 각자의 방법으로 공포를 극복하거나, 공포와 공존하면서 살아간다. 비슷한 공포에 대처하는 다양한 방법이 고담에 사는 인물들의 이야기가 흥미로운 이유다. 배트맨이 곧 공포를 의미할 때, 몇몇은 그가 희망이라는 사실을 알아챈다. 드라마 고담의 캐치프레이즈 ‘고담, 정의가 탄생한 곳’처럼 공포 속에서는 영웅이 탄생하기 마련이다. 이는 고담을 배경으로 한 거의 모든 창작물에서 조명하는 가치로, 독자와 관중들은 각각에서 흥미로운 이야기를 발견할 수 있으리라 믿는다.

<Gotham, Where Justice Is Born>

In 1937, Detective Comics – the face of DC Comics – was published. In the 27th issue, Batman was introduced. It has been about 80 years since the publication of the first Detective Comics, and now Batman and Gotham cannot be explained without each other. Different works, such as the New 52 Batman, feature Gotham as being more than just a stage for Batman; it signifies Batman himself.

The first issue of the New 52 Batman opens with Gotham citizens’ commentary on what the city means to them. In a monologue, Batman introduces an old section from the Gotham Gazette, "Gotham is…" and shares some answers people have suggested. “Gotham is damned, cursed, bedlam, and murderous.” Gotham is the city of fear. It’s the word that first comes to mind amongst the countless words that could define Gotham. Then what makes Gotham represent fear and fright in the DC universe, and more than that, a popular metaphor for unsafe cities?

First, what's happening in Gotham could answer that question. The DC TV series "Gotham", produced by Fox, shows what Gotham used to be like before Batman. Back when GCPD (Gotham City Police Department)’s Commissioner Jim Gordon was just an officer, and Bruce Wayne had just lost his parents. Even before the many famous villains featured in Batman’s stories, the city wasn't that great a place to live in. Mafias and gangs lay in every part of the town, threatening the daily lives of civilians. From the time Jim Gordon was a policeman to the time he became a commissioner, Gotham was always a city of crime. While Superman’s Metropolis and Green Lantern’s Coast City worries about the sporadic threats of cosmic beings, Gotham always has to be concerned about walking through alleys after sundown.

In the Batman series, the show “Gotham” included, the city's frequent, realistic, and often comedic crimes represent the city itself. Gotham and Gotham Girl, from the first volume of “Batman Rebirth”, are good examples. One day, Gotham and Gotham Girl suddenly appear, with superpowers and a past similar to Batman’s. Gotham, like Bruce, lost his father to a mugger when he was young, and almost lost his mother on the very same day. But whereas Bruce lost both of his parents helplessly, Gotham had Batman. Batman saved Gotham's mother from a gunshot and reminds the frightened boy that he does have a chance to overcome his fear. Gotham shares his trauma and emotions with his sister, and they try to save Gotham just as Batman does. There is a scene where Batman finds out their identities, then congratulates them on overcoming their fears. Gotham is a character that defeated the city’s fearful aspects by trying to make it a better place.

Whereas Gotham’s first heroic acts were those of overcoming the city, Batman’s treatment for his trauma was becoming Gotham itself. Batman is another symbol of fear. Batman is often portrayed as an urban legend among his citizens, which highlights this symbolism. To many citizens, Batman is more of a legendary figure who threatens criminals, rather than an actual individual. Batman uses fear to stop (potential) criminals. Batman and Gotham are alike.

Gotham is a place of terror, but the characters in Gotham overcome the fear or manage to coexist with it. The differences in dealing with similar frights are what make Gotham’s characters so interesting. Batman does symbolize fear, but some realize that he also means hope. Like the catchphrase from the TV series, "Gotham, where justice is born," heroes are birthed from fear. This lesson is in nearly every story featuring Gotham, which both readers and audiences alike would find wholly entertaining.
