프렌지 7월호에서 편집진들은 전세계의 다양한 믿음의 형태와, 오늘날은 그들이 어떤 다른 형태로 나타나는지를 각자 선택해 소개합니다.

In Frenzi's July edition, the four editors choose diverse forms of belief around the world, and how they take different forms nowadays.

스텔라 Stella

로키: 로키는 엄밀히 말하면 신이 아니라 서리 거인이다. 하지만 북유럽 신화에서 둘의 차이는 종족일 뿐, 힘이나 능력의 면에서는 비슷하니 신이라고 봐도 될 듯하다. 원래 신화 속 로키는 장난의 신으로, 번번이 사고를 치고 그를 해결하느라 고생을 하곤 한다. 하지만 그런 로키가 있기에 각자의 역할이 정해진 정적인 신들 사이에서도 발전이 있고, 이야기가 계속 나아간다. 특히 라그나로크라는 결말이 정해진 북유럽 신화에서 그 끝을 향해 나아가는 힘은 로키에게 있다고 해도 과언이 아니다.

하지만 요즘은 마블 코믹스를 영화화한 시리즈에서 톰 히들스턴이 연기하는 로키의 모습이 대중에게는 더 익숙할 것 같다. MCU의 영화 속 로키는 서리 거인의 아들이나 오딘에게 입양되었으며, 형인 토르의 빛에 가려 자신을 증명하고자 빌런이 되었지만 결국은 모든 빌런이 그렇듯이 실패하고 만다. 셰익스피어를 좋아하는 배우 톰 히들스턴과 <토르: 천둥의 신>의 감독 케네스 브레너가 만나 셰익스피어의 비극 속 인물과 같은 고뇌를 가진 캐릭터였으나 최근 토르 영화들이 개그 루트를 타면서 캐릭터가 많이 변했다.

그런가 하면 릭 라이어던이 쓴 시리즈 <매그너스 체이스>는 북유럽 신화를 기반으로 하는데, 로키를 악당으로 해석한다. 원래의 로키와 마블 시리즈에서의 로키가 악당이지만 나름의 사연이 있고 미워할 수 없다면, 라이어던의 책 속 로키는 세상의 멸망을 가져오고자 계략을 꾸미는 인물로, 주인공의 최대 적이다. 어떻게 보면 가장 흔한 로키에 대한 해석이라고 볼 수도 있겠다.

Loki: Loki is, technically speaking, not a god but a frost giant. However, as the difference between the two in Norse mythology is simply one of race and not of power or ability, it seems safe for him to be considered a god. Loki from the original myths is the god of mischief, who gets himself — and often the other gods as well — into endless trouble and scrambles to get them out. It is because of Loki’s existence that the static gods change and develop as the story goes on. Especially in the Norse myths, where Ragnarok is foretold and set in stone, the power of heading towards the ending is almost solely in Loki’s hands.

However, people today are more familiar with the Loki performed by Tom Hiddleston in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU Loki is the son of a frost giant who was adopted by Odin. He struggles to prove himself despite being overshadowed by his older brother Thor, eventually becoming a villain and, as all villains eventually do, failing. Created by Shakespeare lover Tom Hiddleston and director Kenneth Branagh, Loki used to be a character straight out of Shakespearean tragedy but has changed greatly in light of the comedic direction of the recent Thor movies.

Rick Riordan’s Magnus Chase the Gods of Asgard books are also based on stories from Norse myth and depict Loki as a villain. If the original Loki and the MCU Loki are villains with reason that cannot be hated, Riordan’s Loki is a being hungering for the destruction of the mortal world and the protagonist’s greatest enemy. One could say that this is the most common interpretation of Loki.

샌드맨: 어린아이들에게 좋은 꿈을 가져다주는 샌드맨 역시 다양하게 해석되었다. 원래 서양 문화권에서 샌드맨은 요정도, 신도 아닌 그저 민담 속에 내려오는 인물이다. 샌드맨은 눈에 모레를 뿌려 깊은 잠을 자고 좋은 꿈을 꾸도록 해준다고 한다. 아마 잠을 자고 일어나면 낀 눈곱이 노란색인 데서 생긴 민담이라는 추측이 가장 유력하다. 문화 속 대표적인 예시는 닐 게이먼이 스토리를 짠 코믹스 <샌드맨> 시리즈와 영화 <라이즈 오브 더 가디언즈> 속 샌드맨의 모습. 하지만 둘은 확연히 다르다.

우선 닐 게이먼의 샌드맨은 그림체부터가 상당히 날카롭고 어둡다. 시리즈 설정은 샌드맨이 납치되어 온 세상의 꿈과 잠이 통제되지 않자 탈출에 성공한 샌드맨이 세상의 질서를 바로잡으러 다닌다는 이야기. 이 시리즈 속 샌드맨은 흔히 생각되는 요정의 모습보다는 신과 같은 모습이다. ‘엔드리스(Endless)’라는 일곱 형제 중 한 명으로, 이들은 운명(Destiny), 죽음(Death), 꿈(Dream), 파괴(Destruction), 욕망(Desire), 절망(Despair), 그리고 광기(Delirium)이다. 관념적인 존재로서 꿈을 주는 요정이 아닌 ‘꿈’이라는 관념 자체인 것이다.

반면 <라이즈 오브 더 가디언즈> 속 샌드맨은 전통적인 요정인 샌드맨의 모습을 보여준다. 흔히 생각하는 황금빛 모레를 뿌려 좋은 꿈을 가져다주는 작고 귀여운 요정이다. (모레마저 검은색인 닐 게이먼의 샌드맨과는 상당히 대비되는 모습이다.) 특히 본 영화에서는 말을 하지 못하지만 머리 위에 모레로 자신의 의사를 표현하는 형상을 띄워 소통을 하려는 노력을 보고 있으면 귀엽다는 말이 절로 나온다.

The Sandman: The Sandman, a being bringing good dreams to children, has also been interpreted in various ways. In the Western world, the Sandman is originally not a fairy nor a god but simply a figure from folktales. Presumably, his name comes from the fact that the rheum in one’s eyes after sleeping is yellow, like sand. In media, two famous depictions of the Sandman are Neil Gaiman’s comic book series The Sandman and the movie Rise of the Guardians. These depictions, however, are distinctly different.

Firstly, Neil Gaiman’s Sandman is visually quite sharp and dark. The storyline revolves around how after the Sandman is kidnapped and dreams go haywire on the world, the Sandman escapes and attempts to restore balance. The Sandman in this series seems more like a god than a fairy, unlike previous representations. He is one of the seven brothers called the ‘Endless’, consisting of Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. He is not a conceptual being such as a fairy who gives dreams, but the concept of ‘dream’ itself.

On the other hand, the Sandman from Rise of the Guardians is the traditional fairy portrayal of the being; a small and cute fairy sprinkling stereotypically golden sand to bring good dreams. (Opposed to Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, who is dark and shadowy right down to his sand.) This mute Sandman’s attempts to communicate by creating images of sand above his head is exceptionally adorable.

박지연 Jiyeon Park

드라마 <루시퍼>의 주인공은 타락 천사다. 지옥에서 나와 LA에 발을 붙이고 살며 클럽을 운영 중인 루시퍼는 아버지인 신과 결코 좋은 관계를 갖고 있지는 않는다. 신은 루시퍼를 지옥으로 돌려보내라는 명과 함께 천사 아메나디엘을 보내고, 루시퍼는 신이 하는 말을 들어줄 생각이 없다. 신은 그 모습을 보이지 않지만 루시퍼에게 굉장히 존재감이 크며, 시즌 2에는 신의 배우자, 천사들의 어머니가 등장한다. 지옥에 갇혀 지내던 ‘어머니’가 인간의 몸으로 들어가게 되는데, 이 신의 모습과 힘은 빛으로 표현된다. 루시퍼는 그녀에게 ‘빛이 있으라’는 작별 인사를 건넨다.

<루시퍼>는 드라마 전반에 걸쳐 성경과 신에 대한 철학자들의 담론이 위트의 소재로 사용되는 것이 매력적인 작품이다. 루시퍼는 원래 DC 코믹스 산하 시리즈 <샌드맨>에 등장했으며, 이후 DC의 콘스탄틴 시리즈 <헬블레이저>에 등장하면서 캐릭터를 쌓았다. DC 코믹스에서는 가톨릭 신뿐만 아니라 그리스 로마 신화를 비롯한 다양한 신화의 신들이 등장한다.

The protagonist of the drama Lucifer is a fallen angel. Lucifer, who has left hell, settled in Los Angeles, and now manages a club, does not have a particularly good relationship with his godly father. God sends the angel Amenadiel to get Lucifer to return to hell, and Lucifer does not want to hear anything that he says. Although God never actually appears, his presence weighs heavily on Lucifer, and in Season 2 God’s spouse, the mother of angels makes an appearance. The ‘mother’ who had been confined in hell enters a human’s body, and her power is shown as light. When Lucifer says goodbye to her, he says, “Let there be light.”

Lucifer’s charm is in that it draws inspiration from the Bible and philosophers’ debates about religion for its humor. The character Lucifer originally appeared in the The Sandman comics written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics, and later continues his development in the Hellblazer comics. In addition to Biblical beings, Greek and Roman gods and gods from diverse pantheons appear in DC comics.

이영서 Yung Seo

When I was little, I discovered the Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott and immediately fell in love with the books. I’d always been enraptured by stories of gods and goddesses, but what made the Scott’s books truly special was that they meshed together entities from different mythologies and pantheons. For example: Scathach from the Irish myths is a central character; her uncle is Prometheus, who is at one point resurrected by Tsagaglalal from the Native American stories. Other major and minor members of Scott’s godly cast are Mars Ultor, Hekate, Bastet, Odin, Hel, the Morrigan, Areop-Enap, Benzaiten, Dumuzid(or Tammuz), Coatlicue, and Zephaniah. Other beings from Greek, Roman, Norse, Egyptian, Celtic, Babylonian, Mesopotamian, Japanese, Indian, and African mythologies are mentioned in passing, painting a complete picture of a world where mortals, immortals, and those in-between coexist, not always peacefully. Scott adds to this diverse mix historical figures — Billy the Kid and Scathach team up to kill Cú Chulainn in a spin-off book — which made for an interesting set of beliefs and histories.

어렸을 적 나는 마이클 스콧의 “불사신 니콜라스 플라멜의 비밀들” 시리즈를 발견하고 첫눈에 반했었다. 항상 신들이 나오는 이야기를 유독 좋아했었지만, 스콧의 책들은 하나 종류의 신화에 대한 것이 아니라 다양한 곳과 시간대에서 온 신들과 판테온을 합쳐 놓았기에 더욱 특별했다. 한 예시로는 주연급 등장인물인 아일랜드 신화의 스카하크인데, 그녀의 삼촌은 프로메테우스이고 작품 내에서 그를 아메리카 원주민들의 신화에 나오는 차가그라랄이 부활시킨다. 스콧의 화려한 출연진에는 마르스 울토르, 헤카테, 바스테트, 오딘, 헬, 모리안, 에이리옵-이납, 변재천, 탐무즈, 코아틀리쿠에, 그리고 스바냐를 포함한 그리스, 로마, 북유럽, 이집트, 켈트, 바빌로니아, 메소포타미아, 일본, 인도, 그리고 아프리카 신화에 등장하는 다양한 신들이 포진하고 있다. 이 다양한 스펙트럼의 등장인물들을 통해 스콧은 필멸자와 불멸자, 그리고 그사이 어중간한 존재들이 평화롭지만은 않게 공존하는 세상의 더 완전한 그림을 그린다. 스콧은 이 화려한 신들의 도가니에 역사적인 인물들을 더한다. 예를 들어 앞에서 말했던 스카하크가 미국 서부의 무법자인 빌리 더 키드와 힘을 합쳐 쿠훌린(또는 쿠컬린)을 무찌르는 식이다. 이로 인해 “불사신 니콜라스 플라멜의 비밀들”은 온갖 종교와 사상의 만남의 장이 되어 상당히 매력적인 분위기를 뽐낸다.

송은제 Eunjay

곧 개봉할 예정인 영화 <신과 함께> 2편에서는 이전 편에 저승사자와 지하세계의 신들만 등장했던 것과 달리 마동석이 성주신 역할로 등장한다. 주호민 작가의 원작 웹툰에서는 영화에서보다 더 다양하고 각자의 사연이 넘치는 한국의 '신' 들이 등장한다. 지금 저승사자로 일하고 있는 강림도령, 서천 꽃밭의 할락궁이, 가택신인 조왕신, 성주신, 측신, 이승의 소별왕과 저승의 대별왕... 보통 구전되어온 이들의 이야기는 낯선 듯 익숙하고, 어딘가 가까이 느껴진다. 우리 설화나 민담 속 신들은 당장에 불벼락을 내릴 것만 같은 공포스러운 위엄보다는 인간을 초월한 기이한 능력을 갖추고서 우리를 지켜보는 존재에 가깝기 때문이다.

가택신과 장독대를 지키는 철융신은 힘의 근원이 민간 가정의 신줏단지라던지 뒷간이나 아궁이에 있지 않은가? 특히 할락궁이, 자청비 등 기구한 인생을 버텨낸 강인한 인간이 신으로 임명되는 것을 보면 한국 신화에서 신들이 얼마나 인간과 가깝게 숨 쉬고 있는지 느끼게 된다. 최근 웹툰 등에서 한국의 신이나 기이한 존재의 모티프를 점차 많이 활용하고 있다. 한 번쯤 우리가 사는 땅의 신 이야기를 들어보자.

The soon-to-be-released movie Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days differs from its prequel in that actor Dong-seok Ma appears as a ‘seong-ju god’ (a god having to do with the house), adding to the cast of strictly death gods and underworld deities in the first movie. In the original webtoon, by Ho-min Joo, a far more diverse array of Korean gods is portrayed. From Gang-rim, who works as a death god, hal-lak-goong-i of the western gardens, the house god jo-wang-sin, the privy goddess, so-byeol-wang of this world and dae-byeol-wang of the other world… Stories that are handed down orally are foreign yet familiar and seem somehow nearby. This is because the gods within our folk tales and fables are more strangely-powered beings that watch over us than all-powerful beings.

Don’t beings like the gods of houses and earthenware crocks draw their power from little boxes or the privy or the hearth? Especially with suffering mortals like the hal-lak-goong-i and ja-cheong-bi being promoted to godly status, gods from Korean mythology live and breathe right alongside humans. The trend today is to draw inspiration from gods or strange creatures from Korean stories. Let us listen to these stories, if only once.
