차창 너머 아무것도 보이지 않는 밤 속에서 비와 번개가 휘감아 내린다. 차는 펑크가 나 버리고 갓 약혼한 자넷과 브래드는 어린 나비처럼 떨고 있다. 극 중의 자넷과 브래드는 극의 관객들과 그 심리를 공유한다. 기괴함을 두려워하고, 낯섦을 경계하며 관객들과 호흡을 함께한다.

도덕과 문명에서 길러져 온 자넷과 브래드가 전화를 빌리러 찾아간 성에는 도덕, 문명과는 거리가 먼 것들뿐이다. 트렌실베니아의 외계인들, 즉, 성주인 프랑크퍼터 박사, 하녀 마젠타와 그의 오빠인 집사 리프라프 등의 기괴한 복장, 그들이 나누는 음담패설, 그리고 인조인간 록키 호러의 등장과 같은 말도 안 되는 상황에 자넷과 브래드, 그리고 관객들은 ‘호러’를 느낀다.

‘호러란 무엇인가?’

이 뮤지컬은 호러에 대한 본질적인 질문을 던진다. 이 뮤지컬을 보기 전의 호러의 의미는, 저속하고 거침없는 언어와 몸짓에 대한 반감, 고상함을 해치는 비주류문화에 대한 경악 정도로 정의 내려두자. 그리고 뮤지컬이 말하고자 하는 호러 이상의 호러의 의미를 생각해보자.

#컬트문화, 록키호러쇼와 호러에 열광하는 문화

1973년 영국에서 처음 시작한 뮤지컬 록키호러쇼, 그리고 1975년 뮤지컬을 바탕으로 만들어진 영화 록키호러픽쳐쇼는 모두 컬트문화의 진수로 불린다. 처음에는 외면받았으나 마니아들에 의해 열렬히 사랑받아 지금까지도 그 명맥을 이어오는 것이다. 사람들은 왜 록키호러쇼에 열광했을까? 왜 호러를 즐기는 것일까? 이를테면, 등장인물 ‘록키 호러’는 프랑크퍼터 박사의 이상향이다. 완벽한 근육질 몸의 인조인간이지만 불완전한 지성을 가진 존재. 우리의 자넷조차도 ‘호러’라는 매력적인 인물에게 빠져버린다. 관객들도 예외는 아니다.

‘호러’는 이 극의 정체성이다. 쾌락과 아름다움을 두르고 있으나 어딘가 결여된 B급 뮤지컬, 이 극은 ‘록키 호러’의 불완전한 모습과 일치한다. 프랑켄슈타인, 노트르담의 꼽추, 킹콩 등을 아무렇게나 짜깁기 한 키치하고 과감한 극은 어딘가 이상한 공상과학 영화를 보고 있다는 느낌을 준다. 그러나 이런 형광 무대 장치와 의상, 레이스와 막 발린 페인트의 조합과 같이 부조화된 모습은 반감에서부터 열광을 끌어내는 수단이 된다. 단지 영화와 극일 뿐이기에, 조금 더 솔직하고 자유로울 수 있기에, 자넷도, 관객들도 ‘록키 호러’와 ‘록키호러쇼’에 환호하게 되는 것이다.

#콜백, 록키호러쇼가 호러에 접근하는 방식

이 작품은 관객들이 호러를 관망하게 두지 않는다. 두 눈으로, 귀로, 나아가 온몸으로 호러에 참여하게 한다. 처음에는 경계심을 늦추지 않던 자넷과 브래드가 춤추고, 노래하고, 쾌락을 즐기듯이, 관객들은 마젠타와 함께 손전등을 비추고, 브래드에게 빵을 던지고, 다 같이 ‘Time warp’에 맞추어 춤을 춘다. 이러한 ‘콜백’을 통해, 프랑크퍼터 박사의 유혹에 이끌려 자넷과 브래드, 그리고 관객들은 점점 자신의 본능에 눈을 뜨게 된다. 우리는 함께 노래하고 춤추고 소리 지르며 ‘록키호러쇼’라는 이상한 공상과학영화를 만들어가는 주체가 된다.

‘콜백’은 이 뮤지컬의 정체성이 확립된 계기라고 할 수 있다. 본래 ‘록키호러쇼’는 주류로부터 외면받는 기괴한 뮤지컬일 뿐이었다. 그러나 일부 록키호러쇼 마니아들이 생기며 이 뮤지컬을 여러 번 관람하는 집단이 형성되었고, 이들은 어떻게 하면 더 즐겁게, 광적으로 극을 즐길까 궁리하기 시작했다. 이들은 프랑크퍼터 박사처럼 망사 스타킹을 신고, 뮤지컬 배우들에게 말을 걸고, 자리에서 일어나 춤을 추며 스스로 극을 재밌게 만든 것이다. 지금까지도 ‘록키호러쇼’는 B급이라 불리는, 결여된 부분을 관객들의 참여로 채운다. 어쩌면 우리가 열광하는 대상은 이 극이 아니라 이 극을 즐기는 자신이 아닐까?

#프로이트 심리학, 호러에 열광하는 이유

오스트리아의 심리학자 지그문트 프로이트는 인간의 심리가 원초아(이드), 자아(에고), 초자아(수퍼에고)로 이루어져 있다고 보았다. 인간의 원초적 본능인 원초아를 도덕 교육에 의한 초자아가 통제한다는 것이다. 우리는 초자아의 통제가 잘 이루어지는 사람을 고상한 사람이라고 일컫는다. 그러나 이러한 통념과는 달리, 프로이트는 초자아보다 원초아가 활발해야 심리적으로 건강한 사람이 될 수 있다고 말한다.

트라비아센의 외계인들은 우리의 발칙한 본능을 일깨운다. 가식, 도덕, 사회의 시선을 거두어내고 무의식 속의 ‘꿈’을 꿈으로 두지 않고 ‘실현’하는 것이다. 초자아가 자신을 얽매는 것으로부터 자유로워지고자 한다. 규범에, 사회적 시선에, 문화에 짓눌린 이들에게 얼마나 신선하고 짜릿한 일이겠는가! 터부시하는 것으로부터 심리적 건강을 도모하는 일탈은 우리의 경직된 일상과 마음을 환기한다. 이상한 복장을 하고 춤추고 노래하며 플로어 쇼를 하는 뮤지컬 배우들이 하는 말은 ‘돈 드림 잇 비 잇’. 꿈만 꾸지 말고 직접 해봐.

‘호러란 무엇인가?’

록키호러쇼는 호러란 ‘드림 잇(Dream it)’에서 ‘비 잇(Be it)’이 되는 과정이자 계기라고 말한다. 꺼려지는 것, 두려운 것을 마주할 때 우리는 불쾌감과 동시에 쾌감을 마주하게 된다. 롤러코스터를 타는 것, 무서운 영화를 보는 것, 반문화를 접하는 것은 모두 불쾌감을 동반하지만 결국 ‘쾌감’을 주기에, 우리가 꿈꾸던 것을 행할 수 있게 하기에 사람들이 호러에 참여하게 되는 것이다.

뮤지컬은 어쩌면 허무하게 끝이 난다. 프랑크푸르트 박사의 무분별한 욕망은 결국 그에게 죽음으로 돌아오고 나머지 외계인들도 집으로 돌아가면서 트랜실베니아의 외계인들의 엽기적인 행각은 막을 내린다. 결국 남겨진 자넷과 브래드 그리고 관객들은 해설자의 말마따나 ‘벌레처럼’방황하게 된다. 그리고 꿈을 꾸듯 넘버‘Science Fiction, Double Feature’로 시작했던 한 편의 뮤지컬은, 모든 것이 꿈이었다는 듯 다시 넘버‘Science Fiction, Double Feature’로 막을 내린다.

<Don't Dream It, Be It!- The Rocky Horror Show>

Nothing can be seen over the car window save the rain and thunder pounding the night sky. The tire is punctured and newly engaged Janet and Brad are shivering like leaves. The audiences likewise share such emotions. Fearful of the grotesque and wary of the unfamiliar, Janet and Brad tread on, side by side with the audience.

The castles where the ‘moral and civilized’ Janet and Brad go to borrow a phone are void of such qualities. Janet, Brad, and audiences feel ‘horror’ because of the Transylvanian aliens (e.g., Dr. Frank N. Furter, the maid Magenta, and her brother the housekeeper Riff Raff), their raunchy jokes, and completely unbelievable happenings like the appearance of the creature Rocky Horror.

“What is horror?”

The musical questions the essence of horror itself. Before watching the musical, let's define horror as hostility towards vulgar gestures and outspoken language, and abhorrence towards a non-mainstream culture that threatens sophistication. Think about horror in a wider sense of the word, bigger than what the musical is trying to say.

#Cult Culture and its Enthusiasm for The Rocky Horror Show and ‘Horror'

The musical The Rocky Horror Show that premiered in England, 1973, and the movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show based on the 1975 version are both called the essence of the cult culture. Though at first the public shunned the show, thanks to the enthusiastic support of the zealots, it was able to still continue showing. Why would have people gone crazy for The Rocky Horror Show? Why enjoy the horror? For example, the character Rocky Horror is what Dr. Frank N. Furter aspires to be. He is a perfectly muscular man, albeit with somewhat lacking intelligence. Even our Janet is attracted to Horror(the character)’s charms. Audiences are no exception.

Horror is what defines the musical. Adorned with beauty and pleasure yet a B-rated musical that’s somewhat lacking, the show resembles Rocky Horror’s imperfections. A kitschy, daring musical that has made a disarrayed collage of Frankenstein, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, King Kong, etc. gives off an odd, SF film-vibe. However, the dissonance of fluorescent-stage equipment and costumes, lace and wet paint, is a way to draw enthusiasm from 반감. Because it's just a movie and a musical, because we can be a little more honest and free, Janet and audiences all cheer for Rocky Horror and The Rocky Horror Show.

#Callback, How The Rocky Horror Show Approaches “Horror”

This show doesn't let the audience step back and just watch the horror. It makes people engage with horror through their eyes, ears, and even the whole body. Just like Janet and Brad, who first were on their guards, dance, sing and enjoy the pleasure, audiences shine the flashlight with Magenta, throw bread to Brad, and dance along to “Time Warp” together. Through such "callbacks," Dr. Frank N. Furter tempts Janet, Brad, and audiences gradually be led by their instincts .Together, we sing, dance and scream, and become the creators of the strange science fiction film known as The Rocky Horror Show.

"Callback" is a key to consolidating the musical's identity. Initially, The Rocky Horror Show was just a grotesque musical that was shunned by the mainstream. However, as a few enthusiasts came, groups began to form, and they wondered how to make the show crazier and more fun. They made it more enjoyable by wearing fishnets like Dr. Frank N. Furter, talking to actors up on stage, and getting up from the seat to dance to the music. Even now, The Rocky Horror Show makes up for its shortcomings that landed the musical amongst the B-List by engaging the audience. Maybe it's not the show that we're crazy about, but ourselves, who are enjoying the show.

#Freudian Psychology, Why People Love “Horror”

Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud divided human psychology into id, ego, and super-ego. He said that the id, the primal instinct, is controlled by the super-ego through moral education. Normally, we refer to a person who is well guided by the super-ego as a sophisticated person. But contrary to the these notions, Freud thought that the id needed to be more in control than the superego in order to be spiritually at ease.

Aliens in Traviasen awaken our naughty instincts. They take away the meaningless facades, morals, and other eyes, and helping us ‘being it’ instead of just ‘dreaming it’, trying to free ourselves from the super-ego’s constraints. How fresh and exciting it is for those weighed down by the rules, social norms, and culture! Being free by tending to our spiritual well-being through tabooed subjects refreshes our rigid minds and lives. Actors who dance and sing in strange costumes, and perform floor shows say, 'Don't Dream It. Be it.' Don't just dream about it. Make it come true.

“What is horror?”

The Rocky Horror Show says that horror is the process of and motivation for transitioning from "Be it" to "Dream It." When we encounter something we fear, something we’d rather turn away from, we feel both discomfort and pleasure. Riding roller coasters, watching horror movies, and encountering countercultures accompany discomfort, but ultimately help us reach the state of ‘catharsis’ and make people try things they’ve only imagined of. That’s why we relish in horror.

The ending may seem bleak and futile: Dr. Frank N. Furter's reckless desires ultimately lead him to his death and the rest of the aliens return home, the Transylvanian aliens coming to an end. Eventually, Janet, Brad, and the audience are lost and wandering around, “like a bug”, as the narrator puts it. And finally, the curtains that opened with the dreamy number “Science Fiction, Double Feature,” closes with “Science Fiction, Double Feature”, as if it had just been a dream all along.
